USMNT World Cup Run Is Over

I laughed when I learned that every country we faced trolled us with Obama's awful campaign slogan in their local newspapers during the World Cup.  I especially liked Germany's grammar correction to that shitty, fascist catchphrase.  People who talk about the viewership of this World Cup as if it is indicative of the future of soccer in America are too dumb for words.  The World Cup is at best a poor man's Olympics, where Americans rally around something as a nation.  The US will always have great interest in the Olympics, since we expect to win every four years.

The USMNT was 1-1-2 in the 2014 World Cup, and soccer fans are still beaming.  Germany taking it easy on us so they would not have to see Portugal again was like getting mercy-ruled in little league.  It's demeaning.  It's not something Americans are used to dealing with in the sports world.  Half of the reason the world loves soccer is because it is the very last sports frontier that America has yet to dominate.

I could not stand listening to the glowing soccer coverage yesterday.  We advanced because of goal differential.  Our signature win came against Ghana.  GHANA.  Find it on a map.  You can't.  While we played Portugal tough, Germany & Belgium were leaps and bounds ahead of the USMNT.  Without Tim Howard, Belgium wins by 5 or 6 goals conservatively.  A losing record is never something real Americans will celebrate, and we aren't going to start for fucking soccer of all things.  And the MLS becoming a pre-retirement stop for aging European stars is a complete joke.  Can you imagine if Paul Pierce decided to finish his basketball career in Europe?  The whole thing is a slap in the face to American exceptionalism.

And here is a picture of a thunderstorm in Chicago last night, with lightning hitting the 3 tallest buildings simultaneously.
